A pergola awning differs from a cassette or folding-arm awning in one fundamental way: the fabric travels along aluminum guide rails fixed to the sides of the pergola frame, rather than extending on retractable arms. This rail-guided system allows the fabric to remain taut across the full width of the installation without intermediate support poles — making it possible to cover spans of 3–8m in a single run.
The fabric is wound onto a motorized roll tube at one end of the pergola. As it extends, a front bar travels along the guide rails, drawing the fabric forward. The entire operation takes around 30 seconds per metre of travel. In strong wind, a wind sensor automatically retracts the system before fabric tension limits are exceeded.
Because the frame provides the structural support, the fabric itself only needs to resist lateral wind load — not cantilever forces. This allows the use of lighter, more UV-stable fabrics that would not survive on a folding-arm system.
